Process of Keratinization & Function of Epidermis

The Process of keratinization takes up to 28 days. As you get older, the process takes longer. When the process slows down, the skin holds on to dead skin cells, which is why when you look at someone they appear to look older.

The epidermis is the skin's outer structure serving as a protective function. The part you can see, the horny layer, is the ultimate result of the keratinisation process and the final stage of a 4 to 6 week journey taken by the keratinocytes.
